The study of family strengths has been pursued by researchers from a variety of disciplines, including psychology, psychiatry, sociology, social work, and marriage and family counseling. Many of the individuals involved work to assist troubled families, as well as doing research on families that function well.
Common and alternative family forms are also leveraged to gain insight into the sociology of the family. Many sociologists study the roles and influence of family members within and beyond the nuclear or immediate family, including grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, godparents, and surrogate kin.
Sociological research on family investigated rural, urban, and black families, explored the impact of the Depression, observed the migration of families from the country to the city, and described the characteristics of single parent families. Family Members Brown University (“Brown” or “the University”) defines a Family Member as a spouse, domestic partner, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, in-laws, and step parent, step child, guardian and ward, or member of one's household.
Families Special Interest Research Group of IASSIDD.
