I was reminded a few days ago of what we are missing when I caught up with Mia Hansen-Love's "Goodbye First Love", a film that conveys the ecstasy and pangs of adolescent passion with a delicacy that the French so often manage to achieve with such effortless ease. In short, this could not have come from any other country.
Goodbye First Love is a 2011 Franco-German film directed by Mia Hansen-Løve. It was selected for the main competition section at the 2011 Locarno International Film Festival.
Mia Hansen-Love returns with GOODBYE FIRST LOVE, an acutely perceptive portrait of a bright young woman in the wake of her first romance. Fifteen-year-old Camille (Lola Creton) is a serious girl who has fallen in love with the cheerful Sullivan (Sebastian Urzendowsky), an older boy who returns her feelings, mostly, but wants to be free to explore the world.
"Goodbye First Love" is like a postcard from a lost Eden, a painfully pure oasis where we're not allowed to linger.

The first half of Goodbye, First Love was eerily familiar. A 15 year old's love could be so close to obsession as to being indistinguishable from it. Mia Hansen-Løve, writer and director did a fabulous job of showing Camille's all-encompassing love for Sullivan who has a life beyond her, something that she does not comprehend and takes to mean he loves her less than she loves him.
Goodbye First Love – review 4 / 5 stars 4 out of 5 stars. Mia Hansen-Løve's second film is a clever, persuasive examination of the meaning of first love – and it has a clear streak of autobiography
