This movie should be compulsory viewing for all budding film students. In fact all film makers, everywhere, should be locked in a small, locked room, strapped down and forced to watch this. For in the hour and a half it takes to watch this movie you will learn more about what movie making is truly all about.
On a deeper level, Life, Above All explores the war between fearful superstition and cool fact, and their proxies against this backdrop. It strikes a careful balance between sentimentality and detached regard, avoiding the trap of tragedy porn. The subject is a devastatingly tragic one, but it suggests a way through by embracing unvarnished ...
"Life, Above All" hit me harder emotionally than any movie I have ever seen. Shame withers the soul, born from an unawareness of why we are who we are. Here, we watch a young girl experience the ...
Life, Above All is a 2010 South African drama film directed by Oliver Schmitz. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. The film was selected as the South African entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards and made the final shortlist announced in January 2011.
Oliver Schmitz's "Life, Above All" earns the tears it inspires. The film is about deep human emotions, evoked with sympathy and love. It takes place entirely within a South African township near Johannesburg, one with modest prosperity and well-tended homes. It centers on the 12-year-old Chanda, who takes on the responsibility of holding her family together after her baby sister dies.
Life, Above All focuses most of all on the intimate moments that fall victim as friends and loved ones stab each other in the back in public while apologizing in private. The shame is buried so deeply that it covers everything in sight. And so it goes that the response to AIDS begins where any proper response to a catastrophe must – at home.
Available on Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Pack December 6th
Life above all is a befitting title for this film. A parable on the value of human life, where prejudices continue to out weigh the value of another. Until one is willing to find the internal strength to take a stand against these mysticisms in favor of building human character.
